Engorgement
At birth, a new mother’s breasts start to fill with milk becoming firm and full and may become painful or tender. This is termed engorgement and is a normal part of the process as the body and breasts adapt to producing the right amount of milk for baby. If there is poor latching resulting in poor emptying of the breast, there may be a build-up of excess milk causing severe engorgement which can become red and painful.
Blocked Ducts and Mastitis
Occasionally and for no specific reason, some milk dusts can become blocked creating a hard and sore spot in the breast tissue. These often just unblock and pass through normal feeding or can be easily massaged out and recover well. In some instances though, mastitis occurs. This is an infection in the tissue of the dusts resulting from bacteria entering the breast tissue through a cut or break in the skin.
Symptoms of mastitis may include fever, body ache and increased fatigue and if untreated, can lead to more complications.
